WhatsApp (the name of which is a play on the phrase, \u201cWhat\u2019s up?\u201d) was launched in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum<\/strong>. Initially, it was conceived as an app that would show the statuses of the people in your phone\u2019s Contacts list. For example, it would show if someone was working or at home. Later, the founders added instant messaging, which became WhatsApp\u2019s primary feature; because of this, though, they also had to launch a paid subscription to help cover the costs of sending texts.<\/p>

After Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014<\/strong>, a voice calling feature was added; the subscription fee was eliminated, allowing users to access the app for free; and third-party advertisements were also removed. More recently, in 2023<\/strong>, users gained the capability to broadcast messages to large groups of their fans or followers via WhatsApp Channels, as well as to send video messages up to 60 seconds<\/strong> in length.<\/p>
