If you’re trying to create an Instagram account and can’t, it’s a common issue that other people experience. And you may be lucky and it’s a quirky issue that you’ll be able to resolve fast.
You might also be unlucky and have to jump through hoops to create a new account.
We’re going to share the most common reasons that you can’t log into your Instagram account and fixes that will help you get back on the platform.
1. Instagram’s Servers are Down
Instagram has 2.3 billion active users and is run by Meta – which has even more. Unfortunately, even with massive data centers, these apps can go down. The platform also has caches, databases and other elements that complete it.
You might be able to see the registration page, but the database may have an issue that stops new account registrations.
What do we recommend?
Use our “Is Instagram Down” tool and see if there’s an issue with the servers. If there are issues, the only thing you can do is wait.
Otherwise, move on to our next recommendations.
2. There’s a Problem with Your App
Apps can break, and if you’ve had it installed for a while and haven’t been on Insta, you may want to update Instagram before trying to create an account.
If your app is updated and you’re still running into problems, you’ll want to follow the directions below:
Android
- Close out the Instagram app
- Go to Settings > Apps and notifications
- Tap Instagram > Storage
- Clear cache
You’ll now need to reopen the app and try registering for a new account.
iOS
Apple doesn’t make it easy for you to delete the cache, so you’ll need to delete the entire app and reinstall it. Follow these instructions:
- Find the app
- Tap and hold on the app icon
- Tap Remove app
You’ll want to follow the instructions for removing the app, which is just a few more taps on Delete.
You can also delete the app on Android and try reinstalling it to see if you can create an account or not.
3. Instagram Blocked Your IP Address🚫
If you can’t create an Instagram account, it may be because the platform has blocked your IP address. Instagram may block IP addresses if they’re associated with activities that violate their guidelines, such as:
- Harmful behavior
- Spamming
- Using unauthorized third-party apps
- Suspicious activity, like logging into accounts with multiple devices or rapidly liking, commenting and following other users
And, if you’re trying to sign up using public WiFi or satellite Internet, there’s a chance multiple people are using the same IP and it has been flagged by Instagram.
4. You Have Too Many Accounts
Instagram allows you to have multiple accounts, but there is a limit to how many you can create. Currently, Instagram allows you to use one login to sign into up to five accounts.
If you already have five different Instagram accounts, you won’t be able to create another one until you delete an existing account.
5. You’ve Previously Violated Instagram’s Terms and Conditions
Do you have an old Instagram account that violated the platform’s terms and conditions? Maybe your account was deleted for this reason, and now, you want to start a new one.
But if you use the same email address or phone number to sign up, there’s a good chance that Instagram won’t let you create an account.
Instagram may have blocked your IP address, email address, or phone number.
You may have previously been blocked for:
- Spamming
- Violating intellectual property laws
- Posting illegal content
- Posting violent content
- Violating other community guidelines
Final Thoughts
There are many reasons why you may not be able to create an Instagram account. In most cases, it’s just because the servers are down or there’s an issue with your app. These are issues that can be fixed by reinstalling the app or just waiting a little while for the servers to come back online.
But what if your IP address, email address or phone number has been blocked for violating community guidelines? In this case, the solution is a bit more complicated. You’ll need to contact Instagram to appeal the decision.
